Rites of Passage

 

Rites of passage are ritual events that marks the importanat tarnsitional phases or the cycle of life a person. these mile stones include birth, coming of age, marriage and death.

 

In the indian culture these rituals starts before the birth of the baby and continue even after the death of the person. They also have additional milestones like begining of eating solid foods and start of formal schooling and such

Valaikapu

A ceremony held before the birth of the baby to bless the mother to be , celebrate her fertality and to ensure a safe bith.

The Thottil Ceremony

This is the naming ceremony of the baby held after the first 11 nights. This ceremony is considerd to be sacred and is a very important trandition

The Upanayanam

The sacred thread ceremony is held to celebrate the secound birth, the spiritual birth of a boy when the boy reaches of age 8.

Manjal Neerattu Vizha

When a girl comes of a certain age there is a celbration held. It marks her change from a child to a young woman.

Thirumanam

Thirumanam is the the wedding ceremony which typically last 2 to 3 days.

Death

After death the funeral rites includes the preparation of body, cremation, home cleansing and dispersal of ashes
